Agro-economic yield of taro clones in Brazil, propagated with different types of cuttings, in three crop seasons Anais da ABC (AABC)
HEREDIA ZARATE,NESTOR A.; VIEIRA,MARIA C.; TABALDI,LUCIANE A.; HEREDIA VIEIRA,DANILO A.; JORGE,ROSIMEIRE P.G.; SALLES,NATALIA A..
The experimental studies were conducted in 2007-2008, 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 crop seasons, in order to know the agro-economic yield of 'Chinês' and "Macaquinho" taro clones, propagated using huge, extra, large, medium, small and tiny cormels. The harvest was done on average on 202 days after planting, in three crop seasons. Based on the joint analysis of variance carried out, it was observed that taro clones showed significant differences in the yield of fresh and dry weight of leaves, cormels, and commercial and non-commercial comels; besides, there were significant differences in yield of a crop season to another and the size of the cuttings induced significant differences in yield. In the conditions that the experiments were conducted, and considering...

Determination of minimal age of five species of Chusquea bamboos through rhizome analysis as a tool to predict the flowering in southern Chile RChHN
TAGLE,LEONARDO; MURÚA,ROBERTO; BRIONES,MIREYA; MONTALBA,RENE; LAMBIN,XAVIER.
Synchronous flowering and subsequent drying up of bamboos of the genus Chusquea are important processes in the dynamics and structure of many forest ecosystems. In southern South America, bamboo flowering and subsequent mast seeding trigger rodent outbreaks associated with zoonotic diseases. Predicting future flowering events requires knowledge of the age of bamboo stands together with species-specific periodicity in flowering. We explored whether it is possible to predict the minimum age in bamboo plants based on the features of their rhizomes. We studied bamboo stands of age known by the local people in 15 sites in the coastal and Andes Mountains as well as in and the Central Valley of southern Chile (37° 48'- 43° 58' S, from 12 to 1047 m.a.s.l.). For...

Ethylene and abscisic acid in the control of development of the rhizome of Kohleria eriantha (Benth.) Hanst. (Gesneriaceae) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Almeida,Julieta Andrea Silva de; Kascheres,Concetta; Pereira,Maria de Fátima D.A..
Kohleria eriantha has rhizomes which are underground stems with buds enclosed by modified leaves, that store starch. The buds of this rhizome can develop in two morphological patterns: an aerial shoot (similar to the mother plant) or a rhizome, depending on the water level present in the substrate. Development of the shoot was inhibited by low water availability (1 mL) in the substrate. It was verified that ethylene and ABA were involved in controlling the development of the rhizome pattern under low water availability. Treatments with ethrel, PEG and ABA induced shoot development whereas treatments with AgNO3 or AVG inhibited shoot development. Increased ethylene and ABA were observed under conditions that inhibited shoot development. Moreover, it is...

Morpho-Anatomical Analysis of the Rhizome in Species of Scleria Berg. (Cyperaceae) from Serra do Cipó (MG) BABT
Lima,Vera Fatima Gomes Alves Pereira; Menezes,Nanuza Luiza de.
Aspects related to the nature of stem thickening in monocotyledons have been the subject of many studies. Primary thickening has been attributed to the Primary Thickening Meristem (PTM). According to most authors, it gives rise, besides the adventitious roots, to the vascular tissues and part of the cortex. In other words, it has centripetal and centrifugal activity. For some authors, however, it gives rise only to the vascular system, and for others, only to part of the cortex. However, this work demonstrated that PTM corresponds to the pericycle in the meristematic phase or to the pericycle associated with the endodermis, also with meristematic activity. It was observed that the pericycle was responsible for the formation of the vascular system of the...

Morphoanatomy of the stem in Cyperaceae Acta Botanica
Rodrigues,Ana Claudia; Estelita,Maria Emília Maranhão.
Cyperaceae are usually perennial, with underground stems mainly rhizomatous, however, other stem types may also occur, such as corms and tubers. The underground stems of five Cyperaceae species were examined. Cyperus rotundus and Fuirena umbellata have plagiotropic rhizomes, while C. esculentus, C. odoratus, Hypolytrum schraderianum and Bulbostylis paradoxa have orthotropic rhizomes. Corms occur in C. rotundus and C. esculentus, and stolons in C. esculentus. The primary body originates from the activity of the apical meristem and later, from the primary thickening meristem (PTM). Secondary growth results from secondary thickening meristem (STM) activity, and occurs in rhizomes of H. schraderianum, B. paradoxa, C. odotarus and F. umbellata. The procambium...

Morphological and anatomical aspects of birdsfoot trefoil and big trefoil R. Bras. Zootec.
Maroso,Rita Poles; Carneiro,Cerci Maria; Scheffer-Basso,Simone Meredith; Favero,Daniela.
This study was carried out with the objective of describing the aerial and underground organs of birdsfoot trefoil [Lotus corniculatus (São Gabriel and ARS-2620 cultivars)] and big trefoil [Lotus uliginosus (Maku cultivar)]. The plants were cultivated in pots and harvested at 150 and 210 days after sowing. Stems, leaves and roots were prepared in according to conventional anatomical techniques. The anatomical structures of L. corniculatus and L. uliginosus differed in terms of pith cell integrity, starch content in the parenchyma root cell and underground stem cortex. The leaves were amphistomatic, with phenolic idioblasts, small vascular bundles and few conducting elements. The underground system was diffuse, with adventitious shoots that grew in two...

Seed germination and seedling morphology of Smilax polyantha (Smilacaceae) Biota Neotropica
Martins,Aline Redondo; Pütz,Norbert; Novembre,Ana Dionisia da Luz Coelho; Piedade,Sônia Maria de Stefano; Glória,Beatriz Appezzato da.
Brazilians have been using the underground organs of Smilax species in alternative medicine since the 19th century because of their anti-rheumatic qualities. However, even nowadays, these species are explored only by extractivism. Studies on seed germination and development of these organs could be useful to preserve these plants. After germination, seedling development of Smilax polyantha was analyzed to understand underground stem formation. Furthermore, to analyze the ontogenesis of the underground system, seedlings aged from one to twelve months were sectioned. One of the most striking features of this species is the presence of two stem branching systems. The plumule gives rise to the first stem branching system with negative geotropism. Its first...
